A Sneak Preview...

A sneak preview...shhhh...don't tell!

Click the link above to hear one of the possible tracks for the new album...

The track I've added for you to listen to is one of the songs short-listed for inclusion on Cosmic Glue. The song was written in 1971 and first recorded in 1977. This is the recording here. Stephan Marlot wrote this subtle arrangement for cello and we recorded the piece last week, spanning over three decades.

Cosmic Glue is an album that spans time, so we are seriously thinking of adding this tune. I hope you enjoy listening to this raw, unmixed version.

David.

******************************************************

The Cosmic Glue Cello Session was a truly amazing experience. To hear songs I wrote as a young man sounding fresh and alive in the studio brought all present to tears. Stephan's cello arrangements were sublime.

Three tracks in all - two from 1977, one from last week. The reason that it works is that my voice hasn't changed discernibly in all those years - I'm not an opera singer...there was never much to lose!

I couldn't be happier, knowing now that the two eras mesh seamlessly as they have.

Another session next week with a fiddle player and a sax man, plus Mike Cooley adding his guitar magic to the tracks.

For all the updates and tasters, like my Cosmic Glue page:

We're now preparing the next session with guitar, fiddle and horn section.

Overdubs on eight tracks and then I'll be concentrating on vocals.

Facebook is where you'll hear the first snippets.

Studio Sessions...

The first two studio days were wonderfully productive. Of the nine songs recorded, six are ready to be worked on. Chris, Mike, Richard and Rufus added their magic.

'Boy In The Attic', 'Secret Lovers', 'Green Fingers', 'Home Made Mini' and 'All I Wanna Do...' are now ready for overdubs and definitive lead vocals.

Monday next will see the string section added, plus horns on BITA and GF.

Maybe I shouldn't do this, but here's a little taster of the raw recording of 'Secret Lovers'.

Cosmic Glue - The magic begins

There were tears in our eyes at the closing notes of some of the new songs we were recording for 'Cosmic Glue'.

We laid down the basic tracks for nine new numbers on Monday the 18th and Tuesday the 19th of February.

Despite the mixing desk smouldering in the early hours of Monday, we managed to patch something together with the Red River Blues sound desk and after miking everyone up we began the first sessions at around 19.00 hours on Monday...

Monday gave us some good takes, but it was Tuesday that saw us run through the numbers with complete and usable takes by nine.

Chris, Richard, Mike and Rufus gave their all...

Now the magic begins. Next Monday will be devoted to the string section and acoustic guitar overdubs, plus a couple of alternate versions of some of the new tunes.

Then I'll be working with my younger self on a handful of tracks from 1977. That's what 'Cosmic Glue' is all about.

I'd love to play you something, but I can't just yet. I'll add a few tasters in a couple of days.

Tonight's the night...updated

I'm recording the first nine tracks for 'Cosmic Glue' with Red River Blues & Rufus Fry tonight in Stroud. The journey begins again...

This has been one of those serendipitous times when many disparate elements come together and promise to work beautifully. When things feel right, they usually are. We will be creating magic tonight - and that's what 'Cosmic Glue' is all about.

We're laying down the basic tracks for:

Home Made Mini
Secret Lovers
Green Fingers
One Good Year
The Day That Elvis Died
Boy In The Attic
Shine
Bang Bang Bang Bang
plus a new version of Sure Feels Like The Blues...

I'll be posting some recording snippets and images from the sessions.

'Cosmic Glue' should be unleashed on the world in the Spring.

Here are the lyrics to one of the songs from Cosmic Glue

The day that Elvis died

·         A virgin boy, I earned my quiff down at the Green CafĂ©
·         The coffee there was frothy, the juke box blared all day
·         The eggs were fried in Brylcreem and Johnny ruled the play
·         Now Johnny’s dead and buried and what hair I have is grey…
·         The day that Elvis died (ghostly…)

·         We hunted birds down at the Rec, our innocence the cost
·         While the Stonehouse fiddler fiddled and teased my David Frost
·         And we dined on Gypsy Hedgehog at the signing of the cross
·         ‘til the Bethel beckoned brightly singing ‘all your souls are lost’ …
·         The day that Elvis died

Refrain:
·         Through August morning’s bluest skies
·         With heron’s calls and dragonflies
·         O’er aqueducts, great heavens high
·         The fairest winds, the driest eyes
·         Reading headlines of surprise
·         That hit us right between the eyes
·         The day that Elvis died

·         The clarion call in Brummie tongues told of the twin we idolised
·         The trucker boy who changed our lives, brought us hope, scandalised
·         Through post war years of black and white he brought us hope of brighter skies
·         A life seen through another’s life
·         The day that Elvis died

·         Refrain:
·         We stayed at a crowded B & B in a small forgotten square
·         Where the sound of sweethearts moaning drifted on the air
·         Where checking in was easy and the colour code was black
·         There’s a veil of tears that blinds our eyes – and we’re never going back
·         To the day that Elvis died.

Just One More Day To Go...

Up early tweaking songs in readiness for Monday and Tuesday's recording sessions. Nine songs in eight hours is the plan. Recording with some of the guys from Red River Blues, plus Rufus Fry. We'll lay down the basic tracks, then I'm back in the following week with my younger self, a bunch of guys from 1977 and cellist Stephan Marlot - drawing the past together with the present.

Expect 'The Day That Elvis Died', 'Home Made Mini', 'One Good Year', 'Green Fingers', Boy In The Attic' and many more.

Cosmic Glue Update

Rehearsal Update: I really put them through the mill. Nine new songs in two hours and we nailed it. Chris and I arrived somewhere in the countryside just outside Ross On Wye at around 7.30 on Wednesday evening to be greeted by two friendly dogs and Richard and Rosie. Mike arrived a little later and we shared a delicious (and unexpected) vegetarian banquet.

At eight we made our way t the little chapel style rehearsal room at the top of the garden. Chris the bassist, Mike on guitar and Richard drumming. I took them through the new songs one by one and over the course of two hours some beautiful arrangements evolved. The guys are true professionals and understood the feel of each song quite quickly. To be honest, they brought them to life.

Next week's recordings will be infused with their magic and I might not sleep until then through the sheer excitement of it all.

I've just listened to the rehearsal recordings and there is beauty there.

I'll post a couple of tracks during the course of next week...plus some of the session images.

Wish us luck!

Cosmic Glue Rehearsals

Monday next sees David Ireland returning to the studio to begin recording the basic tracks for 'Cosmic Glue'. There are eighteen new songs from master story-teller* Dave - each with an intriguing little tale to tell.

Songs to include; Boy In The Attic, The Day That Elvis Died, Green Fingers, Home Made Mini, Black Hole, Secret Lover, Butterfly Wings and more.

Dave will be recording with the cream of local musicians and with his younger self on a couple of tracks. (Dave recently unearthed some master tapes from a 1977 session...)

Watch this space for tasters and fragments and rough takes and videos and other fun stuff.

Rehearsal Update; Off to Ross On Wye this evening to rehearse with the guys from Red River Blues. Nine new songs to run through - no pressure then! Beatles managed their first album in ten hours, so nine songs in eight hours should be no problem for a bunch of seasoned pros like us (...so on to world domination it is then!)

Thank the lord for a sense of humour...
